The Best Hawaiian Island to Visit – Island Personality Guide
Published Monday, October 12th 2020 - Updated Saturday, November 27th 2021The Hawaiian islands are an incredibly popular destination within the US. Hawaii lures families as well as newlyweds on Honeymoons and couples celebrating milestones. Visions of hula dancers and tropical palm trees swaying in the breeze create a very romantic image!
I always cringe when I see someone online ask the opinion of strangers: "What is the best island in Hawaii?" There are so many different variables. It depends on the couple or family, their interests, their dislikes, the budget, the vacation style, and their pre-conceived dreams of what they want to experience on vacation!
There are 6 main islands in the Hawaiian chain: Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Maui, and the island of Hawaii. However, each island has a uniquely distinct personality, offering totally different vacation experiences.
Kauai
Kauai is Hawaii’s island of discovery. With its soaring cliffs of Napali Coast, dramatic canyons, and serene tropical rivers, Kauai connects you with nature. But, it is the laid-back atmosphere that makes this quiet island a place to relax and rejuvenate. Do you love to hike, snorkel, and kayak? You will love Kauai, the "Garden Isle!"
Oahu
Oahu is known as the “Heart of Hawaii.” It is home to the world-renown surf break, the Bonsai Pipeline, and Pearl Harbor. If you’re looking for the famous Waikiki Beach and big-city nightlife, Oahu is the answer.
Molokai
The pace of life is slow on the island of Molokai. There are no big resorts or traffic lights. The residents are mostly native Hawaiian locals who preserve a laid-back, rural lifestyle. Molokai is best for outdoor lovers looking for off-the-beaten-path experiences and travelers who want to get away from it all.
Lanai
The island of Lanai balances restful luxury with rugged terrain. Lanai can feel like two destinations. You’ll find the first has elegant resorts with golfing and world-class amenities. The second is found while hiking and horseback riding on backcountry roads. If you want both luxurious serenity and adventure, Lanai is for you.
Maui
Maui is your tropical paradise if you’re looking for a little bit of everything; black sand beaches, hikes to cascading waterfalls, and nightlife. The famous Road to Hana and the peak of Haleakala boasts some of Maui’s most inspiring scenery. Maui might be the island for you.
Hawaii
Hawaii, referred to as the ‘Big Island’ to avoid confusion with the state, is the largest of all the islands and home to Hawaii’s only active volcano. With incredibly diverse climates and landscapes, from molten lava rivers to snow-capped mountains to beautiful rainforests and black sand beaches, the Big Island is perfect for outdoor lovers.
How in the world do you decide which Hawaiian island is right for you? Well, that's where I come in! I know the right questions to ask to navigate the process and ensure your special trip is custom-crafted just for you. Just because a neighbor enjoyed their resort last summer doesn't mean that you will enjoy the same. Hawaii is not a one-size-fits-all destination. You deserve a vacation that is customized just for YOU!
