Autumn Along the Rhine River
Published Monday, October 4th 2021
Autumn paints the landscape along the Rhine River. The Fall foliage peaks from late September to early October. One way you can revel in its splendor is by setting sail on an intimate river cruise through the Netherlands, Germany, France, and Switzerland.
The Netherlands
Most Rhine River cruises begin or end in Amsterdam. With more than 400,000 trees lining the canals, Amsterdam is covered in fiery foliage of orange and red leaves that flood the waterways and cobblestone streets. Enjoy a bike ride around to find the perfect photo opp. Or experience a tour of local breweries and places to eat for sipping and tasting Dutch flavors.
Germany
Watch from the deck as you pass castle after castle, especially in the Middle Rhine Valley, where these fabled fortresses dot the riverbanks. The colorful Autumn leaves only add to their elegant charm. Visit Heidelberg, the perfectly preserved medieval city nestled along Germany’s Castle Road.
France
Many Rhine River cruises stop in Strasbourg, France, to explore the Alsace countryside blanketed with vineyards and dotted with historic wine villages. The trees, parks, and gardens glow with gorgeous Autumn colors. While in Strasbourg, visit the iconic “La Petite France” quarter. Wander the charming streets and stroll past the famous Strasbourg Cathedral.
Switzerland
The Swiss city of Basel is the other popular starting or ending point for river cruises. In the fall, Basel holds an Annual Autumn Fair where the smell of cinnamon fills the air. At the base of Mt. Pilatus, you can take a gondola ride to the summit. Take the world’s steepest cogwheel train ride down the mountain through stunning Autumn scenery. You will find that perfect fall foliage photo. Then visit the lakeside city of Lucerne. Don’t forget to sample some Swiss chocolate!
The Rhine River is lovely any time of year. But it is especially stunning during the fall. Although a river cruise is not the only way to see Europe's Fall foliage, it will take you through several cities and dock right at the heart of it all. We all know how quickly a vacation can go by. Why not spend every second of it spotting something spectacular?
