With thousands of possible vacations available, there are plenty of great options to choose from — and then there are vacations that are great for you. Being honest about what you truly want and need while knowing your travel preferences can save you from vacation disappointment.

Here's how to find your unique and personal travel profile:

Make a list of all the best memories from vacations you've taken in your lifetime.

Notice if there are any themes or patterns. While you do not necessarily need, or even want, every vacation to be a carbon copy of what you've already done, you can use any prominent themes to guide your future vacation planning. You will have a solid idea of what makes the most meaningful moments for you.

Is it spending quality time with family or friends? Is it a particular type of weather or geography? Is it specific activities? Is it time quiet time or maybe a more social or festive environment? When you build some of these elements into your travel, you're more likely to come home energized and restored.

What is the purpose of your trip?

Are you looking to create extraordinary memories with your kids or grandkids? Are you celebrating a milestone? Maybe you want to immerse yourself in a new language or culture. Do you need time to unplug and destress, or do you need an exhilarating adventure? Plan your vacation around the kind of experience and emotional takeaway you want.

What do you like to do when you're not on vacation?

What hobbies do you enjoy? Golf, gardening, biking, wine tasting, or enjoying craft breweries? What are your interests or passions? History, genealogy, music, or photography?

Also, consider how infused your interest will be in your trip. You'd be surprised how often people book vacations filled with activities they otherwise don't enjoy.

You may love a week of biking in Tuscany even though you'd never go cycling at home. But you will likely be tired, saddle-sore, and wishing for a car. This is not to say you shouldn't try new activities. Just be sure to incorporate them in small bites — like an afternoon bike tour with plenty of stops to see if it's something you'd genuinely like more.
