If you find yourself caught in the mystical and spell-binding Outlander saga, explore the land that inspired Diana Gabaldon's novels and the TV series producers. From dramatic castles to breathtaking landscapes, visit Scotland and embark on an inspiring journey.
MUST-SEE HIGHLIGHTS
Edinburgh Castle
Rising high above the charming Old Town, Edinburgh Castle is the true gem of Scotland's vibrant capital city. Step back in time as you stroll through the fortifications, retracing the steps of kings, queens, soldiers, and even pirates.
Loch Ness
Enjoy a cruise around the most famous lake in Scotland. Keep your eyes peeled for Nessie, referred to as the water horse in the novel. On the banks of the loch is Urquhart Castle, one of the largest castles in Scotland with ruins that date back to the 13th century. It's a wonderful place for a picnic. The nearby village of Beauly is associated with Clan Fraser of Lovat, whom Jamie descends. Visit the tranquil ruins of Beauly Priory, where Claire meets Maisri the seer.
Scottish Highlands
The Scottish Highlands is the Scotland of your imagination with breathtaking mountains. Journey through the spellbinding scenery of Glen Coe, dotted with lakes and waterfalls. Enjoy it on foot or horseback, as the newly-wed Claire and Jamie did after their wedding. The breathtaking views of the highlands get even more dramatic as you approach Fort William.
Doune Castle
You'll recognize this as Castle Leoch. The 14th-century castle, just 33 miles northeast of Glasgow, is the fictional home of Colum MacKenzie and his clan in Outlander. The castle's large courtyard, great hall, and surrounding grounds were all used in filming.
OTHER SCOTTISH GEMS
Castle Leod
One of the most romantic and unspoiled castles in the Scottish Highlands is Castle Leod, with its stunning gardens. For over 500 years, it has been lived in by the same family, Clan Mackenzie. This well-preserved castle in Inverness was the author’s inspiration for Castle Leoch.
Dunalastair Estate
Another Outlander filming location, this countryside estate, is about as idyllic as Scotland can get. Fields of heather, grazing sheep, and wild red grouse on the moors are just some of the rural sights that await you. You can even stay overnight in one of the estate's historic cottages.
Perthshire Countryside
Although it is not as well known as the Scottish Highlands, the Perthshire countryside is no less beguiling. Walk the cobblestone streets of Falkland village, and you may get the feeling you've been here before. This charming village is used as the stand-in for Inverness on Outlander. You can even stay at the guesthouse featured in the show which looks out onto the Bruce Fountain, where Jamie's ghost is first seen.
