Top 5 Most Frequently Asked Travel Questions - Answered
Published Monday, September 5th 2022
I often receive questions from my clients when they start thinking about a European vacation or are getting ready to travel. Since you may have the same, I compiled a list of the top five most frequently asked questions.
WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT EUROPE?
When to visit Europe depends on the time you have available as well as your budget. Europe has three travel seasons: High, Low, and Shoulder Seasons.
High Season - from June to August, this is the most expensive time to travel and the most popular. The weather is hot and the days are long, but it can get very crowded.
Low Season - stretching from November to April, the Low Season is cold, but it is also the most affordable time to visit, and there are fewer tourists.
Shoulder Season - this season falls between April to June and September to November. The weather is nice, if not somewhat unpredictable, and prices are not as high as they will be during the High Season.
HOW FAR IN ADVANCE SHOULD I BEGIN PLANNING?
The earlier you book, the better. There are many components to a custom European vacation: air, accommodations, ground transportation, and excursions. You will have the best availability and pricing the earlier you begin to plan. This is especially important when traveling during peak times such as Spring Break, Summer, or Christmas week. At a minimum, planning your European vacation at least 6-12 months in advance is ideal.
HOW MUCH CASH SHOULD I TAKE?
You can use credit cards to pay for just about everything during your European vacation, except for two things: purchases made at small local shops that may not accept credit cards and gratuities. You will need cash to tip your drivers, guides, and hotel staff. Also, European restaurants prefer you tip in cash and do not allow gratuities to be added to the bill as we do in the US.
WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO GET FOREIGN CURRENCY?
Resist the urge to get foreign currency from your bank in the US before leaving. You will pay the price with a less-than-ideal exchange rate than if you use an ATM in Europe. There are generally ATMs within most major airports to withdraw a small amount of cash. Then look for bank ATMs for lower fees.
WHAT IS THE ATTIRE?
European cathedrals and churches require a modest dress code with knees and shoulders covered for both men and women. People wearing tank tops, shorts, short skirts, and hats are not allowed to enter these holy places.
I hope this is helpful as you think about planning a vacation or are getting ready for an upcoming trip.
