A Hawaiian luau is an act of hospitality, a cultural experience, and one of the most memorable things you can do while visiting the Hawaiian Islands. Attending a Hawaiian luau is a must. Not only will you have the chance to try a variety of traditional dishes, but you’ll also enjoy the food and Mai Tais while taking in a show filled with lively Hawaiian music and vibrant cultural performances.

To appreciate the experience even more, here is a little history of this ancient tradition.

Ancient Luau Practices

The Hawaiian luau dates back to ancient times. In ancient Hawaii, men and women ate their meals separately due to their powerful religious beliefs that only royalty could eat certain delicacies. There was a fear that women could steal the men’s spirit, known as mana, while the generous feast induced their relaxed state. Women ate at the hale aina, or women’s house, while men ate at the hale mua, or men’s house.

The Modern Luau

In 1819, King Kamehameha II held a luau alongside his stepmother, Queen Ka’ahumanu. This event was said to have been the catalyst for the luau that is known in Hawaii today. The King enjoyed the feast with women as a symbolic act to end these religious taboos, and the modern luau was born.

The Feast

A luau commonly includes traditional food, such as Kalua Pig. The pig roasts in an underground oven called an imu. Poi is taro root ground to a pudding consistency. Laulau is meat wrapped in taro leaves and steamed in an imu. Haupia is a coconut pudding. Also served are dried fish, salted meats, sweet potatoes, and fresh fruit.

Today's Hawaiian Luau

Kinship and the importance of family coming together are at the core of today’s luau. During a luau, you’ll enjoy family-friendly activities and cultural demonstrations. Hawaiian music plays in the background during dinner, followed by a performance.

There are a large number of different luaus available to visitors today. Some are quite touristy. The more traditional luaus are focused on culture and sharing Hawaii’s history and stories. The best luaus are the authentic, private family luaus given to celebrate milestone events, like weddings, graduations, and major anniversaries.

With a wide variation in ambiance, entertainment value, and food quality, I am pleased to steer my clients toward the more authentic Hawaiian luaus.  For great fun, food, and Aloha Spirit, include the luau experience in your next trip to Hawaii.
